Chapter Seventeen

He sent a text message to Ben after lunch asking him to be at the hotel where Black Ice was staying a little after two o’clock. They’d all make the trip together to the venue for the sound check. A couple of minutes later Ben answered his message.

“Is everyone cool with me being there with you?” Ben’s text read.

“Dagger said he’d like to talk to you one more time about the album cover before you fly home, but I told him you weren’t ever leaving.” He grinned when he typed that message, then waited for Ben’s reply. A full five minutes passed before Ben did reply and the smile fell from Zac’s face when he read it.

“You know I have to leave soon. Don’t make me feel guilty for doing my fucking job.”

That wasn’t the response he expected at all and now he was filled with regret for sending the message. “Jesus, I’m sorry,” he typed. “Don’t be pissed. That was just my stupid way of trying to get you to stay longer.”

“I understand that, but we’ve talked about this and you know I can’t stay. Please, let’s just enjoy the time we have left before we both have to get back to the real world.”

The real world.

He thought about the meaning behind that phrase and wondered if his own interpretation was the same as Ben’s. His “real world” had Ben playing a major role in it, but was it the same for him?

“Agreed. We’ll have fun while we can,” he typed.

“Thank you. I’ll see you later,” Ben answered.
